Rejoicing in the Storm

English Audio Version

Is the wind rattling your shutters?

Rejoice in the mighty power of the Lord! He is the one that can save you!

Are the floodwaters rising around your feet?

Shout with anticipation! God is on the way to your rescue!

No, no, you say. You don’t get it. That’s not what God promised me. He said I would lead a trouble-free life, because I reside under the protection of his loving hand.

Really? The Word says that?

Let’s look at 2 Timothy 1:8, 12:

“Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God . . . which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.”

Here's what Peter is telling us: If we lead a life of Christian ease, how will the world see us as understanding and compassionate to their suffering?

Can a person born to wealth truly empathize with someone who doesn’t know from month-to-month if they will have a home?

Can a hale and healthy person really internalize what it means to live in continual pain and suffering that the doctors can’t fix?

Peter says the important thing is to remember our salvation in the time of our troubles.

Yes, the house is being foreclosed, but I am still a child of the King!

Yes, the doctor gave me a bad report, but Christ is still my Lord!

Yes, my miscarriage broke my heart, but God is still on the throne!

Our peace in Christ is in knowing we have salvation in the Lord even when the storm rattles our shutters and the floodwaters rise at our feet. That’s what draws the world to salvation in him.

We don’t rejoice for the storm. We rejoice for God’s goodness during the storm.
