A Light Unto Our Feet

There is a way which seems right unto man… It’s just that the Christian doesn’t have to walk it.

We have to find the better path.

That’s not always easy. Television tells us the right path is to allow everyone to do what seems right to them, and that none of it is wrong, if no one else is hurt.

Our court system says all is forgiven if we simply do our time.

Focus groups say to run away and find ourselves, even if we have to leave our responsibilities behind.

Feel-good churches suggest a big enough offering will cover a multitude of sins.

Modern parenting books tell us that if we give up just a little more of ourselves, our kids will turn out perfect in every way.

How do we find the path of Christ?

Psalm 18:28 says:

“For you will light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.”

We can’t depend on the images that flicker across our televisions; our court systems; focus groups; or even the church or parenting books. Our only direction has to come directly from God.

We find his person and the explanation of his nature in the Bible. Only when we open the Book to read the instructions of the Lord will we truly find the steps he has already outlined for us to walk. We’ll find him in the stories of how the Father responded to the deeds of the children of Israel, how Jesus reacted to the taunts of the godless, and how the saints endeavored to tirelessly spread the gospel to a lost and needy world.

These faithful saints give us our better path, and when we study their lives, we find how God wants us to live. We no longer see the way that seems right unto man. We join the footsteps that lead unto God.

Following after Jesus isn’t difficult if we study the footsteps laid out in the written Word of God.
