Withstanding the Pressure

The biggest and most successful building project ever attempted in the United States was that of Hoover Dam.

However, before actual construction could begin, everything at the building site had to be stripped away. Even the surface of the rock that formed the sides of Boulder Canyon had to be meticulously chipped, blasted, and scoured back to solid rock.

The newly arising dam had to be built on a firm foundation, for it had to withstand all the pressures that would eventually rise against it. When we build our Christian lives, we must be the same. Only with a firm foundation can we stand against the rising pressures of this world.

Luke 6:47-49 gives us the blueprint for building our Christian lives. It also tells us what will happen if we do not follow God’s blueprint.

Three Steps for a Successful Christian Life:

Step 1: We come to him, accepting Jesus as the Christ. When we invite him to be our lord and master, he becomes the master builder in our life.

Step 2: We listen to what God says. He speaks to us from his Word, and by immersing ourselves, we begin to see the blueprint he shows us for our life.

Step 3: We follow the instructions given to us in God’s Word. We roll up our sleeves, put our back into the job, and get to work for him.

Jesus compares the Christian who has done these things to a man building a house on a rock. He digs deep, removing all loose debris, and when he reaches the solid rock, he places his foundation stones against it. Then the waters can rise, and the house will hold against the flood.

However, if we do not follow God’s blueprint, we can expect only disaster when the storms come. If the message of Christ appeals to us, but we begin to lay our foundation stones before we reach bedrock, then when the water rises, the soil will give way, and our house will fall down around us.

Three Steps that Lead to Disaster:

Step 1: We come to Jesus, accepting him as the Christ, but we refuse to relinquish control. We want him as our employee, not our master.

Step 2: We pick and choose the Scriptures we read, only ingesting those that appeal to our base natures. God’s total plan is never revealed to us.

Step 3: We build our Christian walk on what feels good to us, and we only make those changes that are convenient.

We have become the man who builds his house on the sand, and when it falls, it brings about a great ruin. We must build with God’s blueprint, for only then can we withstand the pressures the world will bring to bear on us.

Jesus is the bedrock under our feet, and when we place our foundation stones upon him, the rising pressures of this world will never tear us loose.

We already know the end of the story. Jesus rules, and the devil drools.
