A flood is a force that can only be fought for a time. The rising waters will invade every space and consume everything it touches.
New York in 2012 found this out when Hurricane Sandy rose up against the greatest city in the world, inundating her, flooding her bowels with seawater, and turning entire neighborhoods to wastelands. Damages were tagged at $62 billion by some estimates.
New York tried to protect herself, securing her coastline, sandbagging her infrastructure, and safeguarding her subway system. She raised the greatest defenses she knew, trusting in her might to stand strong no matter how the storm battered her shores.
Once the floodwaters reached Verizon’s 90,000 cubic foot underground telecommunications cable vault, the saltwater ate into miles of copper wiring, and the disaster escalated into an immeasurable catastrophe for millions of people. They had no way to call for help.
New York’s hopes were washed away by the rising waters of the storm.
Chedorlaomer was an Elamite king of antiquity. His name means Worshipper of Lagamaru, an Elamite deity. He was the powerhouse of his day. He ruled over all the surrounding lands, claiming them as his own, a New York in his own right, secured and safeguarded against all assaults.
In the time of Abraham, Chedorlaomer took Lot as one of his captives. He had no idea that God’s flood was about to overrun his kingdom, and his cable vault of support from his neighboring kingdoms would fail him.
Chedorlaomer would have no way to call for help. No backup would arrive. The damages would be catastrophic.
Genesis 14:12-16 tells the story of the rising flood of Abraham’s retaliation:
“[Chedorlaomer, king of Elam] took Lot, the son of Abram's brother, who was dwelling in Sodom, and his possessions, and went their way. Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram. When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. Then he brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people.”
Chedorlaomer and his surrounding allies were washed away by the rising flood of Abraham’s storm. What made the difference? Abraham was on the side of right and on the side of God. The great Creator of the universe lifted Abraham on the crest of his rising power, and the Elamite king was defenseless against him.
Our enemies are the same. Debt, illness, divorce, they are all citadels of the devil’s strength, and he uses them to maintain dominance over us. We have to rise up with God as our flood, and sweep away those things that stand in our way. With God at our side, our problems will be overrun with the rising waters of his all-consuming awesomeness, and the devil’s communication will be kaput, leaving him unable to call for help. The devil will be inundated, and we will be victorious!
Praise God with a thousand hallelujahs. We will conquer the evil one!
When God rises against our problems, they are swept away by the floodwaters of his eternal glory and awesome majesty.
